Grace in Place of Grace

Hunger! You and I have been there. Maybe in a hospital waiting or hotel room. Right down the hall there it is! A vending machine filled with sweet and salty snacks galore. Supported by some kind of spring thing, one bag of pretzels behind another. You choose a letter and number and bam…your snack falls to the bottom of this food filled contraption and you fill your cheeks with satisfying treats.

While you watch this food falling spectacle, something else takes place you may not have noticed. Another bag of pretzels moves forward into the place of the previous one. Pretzels in place of pretzels!

I love the Gospel of John, which we are studying together here in this blog and Podcast. The meaning of this verse has been quickened to my heart by God’s Holy Spirit and to it I cling.

Here it is…

“For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace (in the Greek literally, grace in place of grace). John 1:16

Yet unlike a faulty vending machine, which sometimes gets the snack hung up on that unpredictable spring and you have to begin the machine shaking process, the grace received by this “One” will never run out. Eventually there will be no more pretzels and someone will have to fill it back up. Never, not ever, will grace reveal an empty spring. The grace found in the Lord Jesus Christ is always available. You don’t even have to pay for it because He paid for your sin on the cross! Be satisfied in His grace in place of grace! That is my prayer for myself and you.

Here is today’s Engagement with Truth heart work.

1-Continue to mark every reference to the Word and it’s synonyms in John 1:6-18

2-Continue to list everything you learn about the Word in your Engagement with Truth notebook:

v. 7 the Word is the Light
v. 9 the Word is the true Light which, coming into the world enlightens every man

Remember, we are looking at the obvious and what you are marking is a key word. A repeated word. As you continue to make this list, please don’t paraphrase. Use words directly from the text, like I did in the example above.

3-Ask the Lord to reveal how you can apply these truths to your current circumstances and journal those thoughts. Don’t just write them down…believe God and walk in them.

Oh, GRACE IN PLACE OF GRACE! GLORY TO GOD!
