Psalm 86:1-17 ESV – 1 Incline your ear, O LORD, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. 2 Preserve my life, for I am godly; save your servant, who trusts in you–you are my God. 3 Be gracious to me, O Lord, for to you do I cry all the day. 4 Gladden the soul of your servant, for to you, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. 5 For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.
6 Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer; listen to my plea for grace. 7 In the day of my trouble I call upon you, for you answer me. 8 There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours. 9 All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name. 10 For you are great and do wondrous things; you alone are God.
11 Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name. 12 I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever. 13 For great is your steadfast love toward me; you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol. 14 O God, insolent men have risen up against me; a band of ruthless men seeks my life, and they do not set you before them. 15 But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. 16 Turn to me and be gracious to me; give your strength to your servant, and save the son of your maidservant. 17 Show me a sign of your favor, that those who hate me may see and be put to shame because you, LORD, have helped me and comforted me.
God, my Father,
You hear me when I cry to you. You listen to my pleas . . .You are gracious, and merciful. You are abounding in steadfast love. You are my Father, You love me.
Oh, God, You are so faithful to listen to me, and I confess that it is so easy for me not to listen to you. What deathly pride and self-sufficiency. I need you, Lord. Oh, how I need your mercy and grace. Oh, how I need your wisdom. I need to have the strength to do what is right and just, to obey your Word, whether it is hard or not; whether it is popular or not. You are my comfort and my help. You are the stronghold of my life. You are my God. I am your servant, your beloved child.
Please remember to pray for our brothers and sisters in the United Arab Emirates. Though expatriates enjoy relative tolerance in the country, converts to Christianity from Islam face the majority of persecution in the country, and they experience a great deal of pressure to recant their faith, both from their immediate families and society as a whole.
Psalm 90:1-17 ESV –
1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. 3 You return man to dust and say, “Return, O children of man!” 4 For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. 5 You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning: 6 in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers.
You are the Sovereign God of all creation. You are eternal, and all-powerful; all-knowing and just. You rule over life and death; wars and peace; plenty and famine. And yet – my home, my safety, my security, is with you. You are with me always. You are my Father.
7 For we are brought to an end by your anger; by your wrath we are dismayed. 8 You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. 9 For all our days pass away under your wrath; we bring our years to an end like a sigh. 10 The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away.11 Who considers the power of your anger, and your wrath according to the fear of you?
God, who can stand in your presence? No one! No one is righteous. All of our thoughts and deeds are known to you. There is no hiding. There is no pretense. Because you are just, you cannot just let sin slide. There must be justice. The debt of sin must be paid.
12 So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. 13 Return, O LORD! How long? Have pity on your servants! 14 Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. 15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil. 16 Let your work be shown to your servants, and your glorious power to their children. 17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!
Oh, God, you have had pity on your servants! You sent your Son into the world that we might be saved. You provided a spotless lamb in Jesus, so that you could satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, rather than your just wrath. Lord, we are grateful for every moment that you give us, for our life and breath is given out of your mercy. I don’t want to waste this precious life that you have given to me. Show me how you want me to live. Teach me, and soften my heart and incline my will to obey what you ask. In Jesus I have your favor; in Jesus I have purpose. You have prepared works for me to do. You have made me and fashioned me. You are such a gracious and good God.
This week please remember our brothers and sisters in Mexico. They face increased pressure from organized crime and corruption, and little governmental protection.
