This is what real love is: It is not our love for God; it is God’s love for us. He sent his Son to die in our place to take away our sins.
1 John 4:10 (NCV)
Have you ever sent or received a note that looks like this:
I love you. Do you love me? Check one. __ yes or __ no
Regardless of our love for God, His love for us is immeasurably more! That kind of potentially unreciprocated love is incomprehensible to us. Before taking the risk to love, we want to at least check our odds of being loved in return.
God’s love for us is not only incomprehensible, it’s limitless! His love knows no bounds. We don’t even have the capacity to understand His kind of love. Yet He loves us anyway! Even when our lives are running in the opposite direction and there’s no sign of slowing down, He loves us still. He loves us more than any human could possibly love us AND He knows us better than we even know ourselves.
It occurs to me that …
Love gives. Love risks. Love pursues. Love forgives. Love rests.
This Advent season can be the time we choose to rest in God’s abundant love for us personally and respond to His tender embrace. Our greatest need has been met in the ultimate gift of Jesus Christ. He lived the life we could not live and He died the death we deserved to die. That’s love, my friend. That’s Christmas!
Living It Out – Slow down today and remember when you first responded to the love of God. How did He draw you to Himself? Is there someone you should thank for being faithful to share His great love with you?
