It’s the child He loves that He disciplines;
the child He embraces, He also corrects. Hebrews 12:6 (The Message)
Because of His immense love, God disciplines and corrects us when it’s necessary. Hebrews 12:6 is a verse out of a larger context explaining that a natural father’s love for his children is the motivation for keeping them in line. How much more does our heavenly Father love His own and want our best. He will do whatever is necessary to conform us to the image of His beloved Son.
Discipline, guidance and correction. Is it possible to have real love without those things? Based on the Word of God, specifically this passage in Hebrews, I don’t think so! As a matter of fact, God’s discipline (child training), guidance (by the indwelling Holy Spirit) and chastening (correction or punishment) is an evidence that we belong to Him. He gets really creative in each of those areas!
The Apostle Paul exhorted youngTimothy, his beloved son in the faith, to discipline himself for the purpose of godliness. It’s not that a spiritually disciplined life causes God to love you more, but it causes you to love God more! Spending time studying His Word, praying according to it and living it out sets you up to know your irresistible Savior.
Living It Out – Ironically, this is the time of year when we spend the least amount to time savoring our Savior. We shop and stress and bake and stress and wrap and stress and entertain and … did I mention stress? Make the conscious choice to unplug from the world for a little while today. Just sit with Him; read Psalm 37 several times; pray through it and ask Him if there are things you need to know and change. He’ll show you because you’re His child.
